THE THREE GENERATIONS

THE THREE GENERATIONS

Evo presented Fidel with 3 huge portraits of Jose Marti and Che Guevara, and Fidel on canvass made from Coca leaves for his 80th birthday!!

Evo Morales: Wise Grandfather, Fidel; Father, Hugo; and I am the son of you both—

This is how Evo Morales described the relationship between the three heads of state in his speech to tens of thousands of international students at Revolution Plaza in Havana Cuba, Saturday, April 29, 2006 during a celebration marking the one year anniversary of the signing of the ALBA (Bolivarian Alternative for the Americas) trade agreement between Venezuela and Cuba, and yesterday’s inclusion of Bolivia into the agreement, as well as the incorporation of Bolivia’s contribution: a “People’s Trade Treaty” (TCP). Evo was warmly received by the enthusiastic and cheering crowd as were Hugo and Fidel. The atmosphere was friendly and celebratory.

Evo shared an anecdote about his first trip to Cuba in 1991, to attend a conference. He had no money for food or even a return ticket. But he had been granted 3 minutes to address Fidel, and although he had to wait two days for that 3 minutes, he would not miss the opportunity to see Cuba and meet Fidel. He drank only a can of Tropicola (Cuba’s Coke alternative) each day to keep him going! He recalled how he was later stuck in Lima with only one dollar in his pocket and still no way to get back to Bolivia. Finishing his story, he noted that this time when he landed in Cuba, “Fidel was waiting to greet me at the airport….and now in the Protocol house there is food available 24 hours !!!! "

Evo spoke of incorporating the indigenous communities of Bolivia into the nation’s decision-making apparatus through a new refounding constitution. He warned that he is committed to defending his people’s rights and putting a stop to the exploitation of Bolivia’s natural resources by foreign interests by gaining control of not only petroleum and natural gas, but of mineral and other natural resources as well ( his speech can be heard at www.cybercircle.org)

For his 80th birthday, Evo presented Fidel with 3 huge portraits of Jose Marti, Che Guevara, and Fidel on canvass made from Coca leaves !

Chavez enjoyed his usual “rock star” reception. Taking advantage of the momentum he led the audience in chants and cheers, before launching into a lesson on the history of independence struggles in South America and the Caribbean. And Fidel, after explaining himself to Evo and apologizing for the rough stay he had in 1991, he used his speech to make record of facts and figures regarding the internationalist activities of Cuba and Venezuela over the last few years.
